The price of medicines just got a little bit lower, thanks to a initiative from NTUC Healthcare Cooperative that was launched yesterday. From July 1, there will be a 5 per cent discount on prescription and pharmacy-only medicine at its Unity pharmacies, the social enterprise said.
The six-month discount - which ends on Dec 31 - is aimed at helping Singaporeans defray their medical expenses.
"Medication is a necessary expenditure when we fall sick. We can ill afford not to take our medicine if we want to recover. Yet, we must be able to afford to pay for our medicine," said NTUC Healthcare's chairman Chua Cher Choon. The enterprise remains committed, especially during this period of economic difficulty, in helping to keep medicines affordable and in helping Singaporeans reduce their expenses on much needed medications, said Mr Chua.
Currently, senior citizens enjoy a 5-per-cent discount at its 46 pharmacies every Tuesday, and a basket of 200 often used items are priced at 10 per cent or more lower than at its competitiors.
The discount is restricted to prescription and pharmacy-only medicine because Singaporeans are generally choosing to purchase their prescribed medicine not only from their doctors but also from Unity pharmacies because of factors like price and convenience of purchases, said Mrs Chan Yiam Moi, general manager of NTUC Healthcare (Retail).
"At the same time, as Singaporeans become more affluent and knowledgeable on health issues, more are practising responsible self-medication and choose to approach our pharmacists for advice and medication," she said.
